Who Can Request St. Joseph County Birth Records

Indiana law limits who can get a certified birth certificate. These rules apply at the St. Joseph County office just like they do at every other county in the state. The goal is to protect personal information while still letting the right people access it. Under IC 16-37-1-10, birth record information is confidential.

The following people can request a certified St. Joseph County birth certificate:

  • The person named on the record, if 18 or older
  • A parent listed on the birth certificate
  • A legal guardian with court documentation
  • A grandparent, sibling (18+), or child (18+) with proof of relationship
  • An attorney with letterhead or court documents
  • Someone with a notarized release from the person named

Errors on birth records can be fixed. A misspelled name, a wrong date, or a missing detail can all be corrected through the proper channels. Under IC 16-37-1-8, the local health officer can issue corrections on certain items without a court order. Minor spelling changes, a date of birth fix (day only), and changes to a parent's birthplace fall into this category. Bring supporting documents that are at least 10 years old to back up the correction.

For bigger changes, like a legal name change, you will need a court order first. Take the court order to the St. Joseph County Health Department, and they will process the update on the birth record. The state charges $8 for amendments and corrections.

Paternity affidavits in St. Joseph County are handled by appointment only. Both parents must come to the office in person with government-issued ID. The record is legally changed the same day. This is for cases where a father needs to be added to the birth certificate after the initial filing. If the child is under 18, the paternity form can be signed at the local health department in the county where the birth took place.
